Nathan and Nellie call me maybe once every 6 months. They want a massage, but have some questions before they make an appointment. Nervous Nathan and Nervous Nellie are uncomfortable about a variety of body issues. Concerns range from hair implants to foot issues and everything else in-between.
Once I determine specifically what is making Nathan and Nellie uncomfortable, I do my best to reassure them. Knowing that I am not looking at flaws and am focused on giving them the best therapeutic massage I can is a great starting point. Addressing their concerns with specifics definitely helps. Giving them details about draping methods on the table for their privacy, avoiding the area of concern if necessary, or discussing various massage modalities that can be done clothed usually eases a lot of anxiety. Sometimes offering a focused massage session will bring Nathan and Nellie into the office for massage. Knowing that only the problem area will be massaged and that the therapist will demonstrate draping techniques goes a long way in relieving some nervousness.
So if you are a Nervous Nathan or Nervous Nellie, don't dismiss massage from your wellness program until you contact a massage therapist. Ask them to talk and walk you through your concerns.
